How to Choose Cardboard / Paper-based Can Carriers

Aspect
Design (Cost and Durability) Consider the coverage area of the carrier. Full-coverage designs use more material, offering better durability and more space for branding. Less material can reduce costs but might sacrifice some protection and branding opportunities.
Ease of Recycling Check if the carrier is 100% curbside recyclable. Watch out for plastic coatings that can complicate recycling.
Ease of Application Consider carriers that work with manual, semi-automatic, or fully automatic applicators. Ensure scalability for your operations.

One of the first questions we received was, 'Can these cardboard can carriers handle wet cans?' We decided to find out with a fun dunk test. While we're waiting for the official lab report from our supplier MARTEC, here's a simple and playful demo to show you how our carriers hold up in water. Spoiler: they're tougher than they look.

The Trade-Off: Value, Durability, or Eco?

It’s like the classic “fast, cheap, good” iron triangle - it's difficult to have it all, but sacrificing quality isn’t an option. If a carrier doesn’t get the job done, it’s just adding to the waste.

In partnering with MARTEC, we found a balance that works for most beverage cans. Their carriers maximize material efficiency, providing enough sturdiness for the most popular can formats without overusing resources or resorting to overkill.

While they may not use the least materials or be as durable as HDPE plastic, MARTEC carriers are strong enough to handle standard canning and transportation processes. As long as you let them ventilate before wrapping, they are more than capable of withstanding moisture from canning and refrigeration. And considering how much easier it is to recycle paperboard compared to plastic, the benefits easily outweigh the slight trade-offs, in our opinion.

If this approach also sounds right for your beverage cans, get in touch with us to see how MARTEC carriers can meet your needs.
